I'll be subbing here and there and then who knows.

I just lost my gas for blogging. I hope I can notify this group (if anyone is left) when I upload the final chapter of projects to my FB page.

In the meantime, have a great summer and happy Arting!Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12610949345380216302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6614930573743897800.post-91799105341599009862017-01-12T11:06:00.003-08:002017-01-12T11:07:40.130-08:00Vist the Art Makes Kids Smart Face Book PageHere ART MAKES KIDS SMART
But we managed to get in lots of projects this October. I'm big on fun and being busy. We did lots of painting, drawing, working with oil pastels, and tons of construction art. Here are the pictures up at my FB page. It's a community page and open to all so you should be able to access. Thank you Pinterest for the ideas.
The reason it's easy is I provide the clay to the kindergarten teachers and they have a station that runs through the week for tracing their clay hands. An adult does most of the work. After tracing the hand in the clay slab and cutting it out, you smooth out the edges and place the hand in a small bowl so that the hand stays curved when dried.

Then they come to me and I fire them in the kiln. To identify each hand I use the first two initials of the teacher plus a number (numbers decided from the attendance sheets). Those identifiers are put on the back (which will be the bottom) of the hand. Then the kiddos apply the glaze and I do a final firing. The results are cute. We make these for a Mother's Day present.
This is my last summer as a contracted teacher. By next summer I'll be retired. I'm very ready.

I likely won't blog after this year. I'd like to blog about my last year. I have a bunch of projects to share and have been busy organizing my many pictures. I'm not even sure anyone is reading this but blogging is for me anyway. It's a way to express my thoughts and reflect on my teaching. That anyone would care to visit here is amazing to me.

I've been in the same room for 12 years. I've taught art for 17, five of which were on a cart. Two actually. This year I'm moving.

My old room was small but big enough for six tables. I managed pretty well most of the time. I did get cluttered a lot. My new room is about 1/3 size bigger and I go from one sink to 4. It will be worth all the effort of moving once I'm done.
And other stuff maybe....I haven't posted in this blog in over a year. Other areas of interest have taken up time in my life (I'm taking jazz guitar lessons for one) and reflecting on my teaching has taken a back seat. No, make that writing about my reflections. I always reflect on what it is I'm doing in the classroom, I just stopped writing about those reflections.

I'm going to try to write about my last year in teaching, reflecting on things I've learned, mistakes I've made, and successes I've had. When I started this blog, I began by posting reflections from an art class I took online. From there I began sharing the cool things the kids were doing in class. I at one time had a webpage but Facebook makes it much easier to share my kids work so I have been doing that for a few years now. The webpage is no more. There may still be broken links to it. I fix them when I find them.

My FB page ( https://www.facebook.com/MrTisArtSmart) is a place where students, parents, and friends can "friend" me and get updates and links to my Community page ( https://www.facebook.com/artmakeskidssmart/ ). If interested, just press "like" on the community page and you'll have access to all the photo albums. There you can see the many projects I've done in class. As I get my ideas from some of you, and Pinterest as well as other blogs, others deserve the credit for sharing their great ideas of art experiences to use in the classroom. Pinterest has been a life saver for me. I love how so many of you share your ideas with folks like me. There sure are a lot of talented teachers out there! ( https://www.pinterest.com/dhtriplett/ )

Moving my room next year

So after 5 years on the cart and 10 plus years in a small room, I'm getting a new room. I'll gain another 1/3 of my current classroom size so that's a plus. They are putting in two deep basin sinks and lots of shelving in my new room. I pack up the old art room stuff, they move it, and then I unpack it in my new room. I hope I like it. It will be my 28th year teaching and my first year in a portable. But I'll have my own bathroom! I like that part.

My last year in full time teaching

I turn 65 in March of 2017. Since my wife has been retired for over a year now, I plan to retire at the end of next year. What I hope to do from now until then is to reflect on my work experiences and post those reflections here.

A blog can serve many purposes. If people benefit what the things I share, that's a plus. But reflecting on one's work should be an activity in which all professionals engage. It's a healthy practice. It doesn't have to be written down but for many, that approach is best. Part of the reason I want to write about my last year is that I think it will help me deal with the emotions of leaving the teaching profession. This job has been a huge part of my life. It's Saturday and still I was up in my classroom for over 2 hours today removing work from the kiln and putting the next batch in. Yikes! I really am pushing it this year. School is over in 10 days!

I will miss working everyday I think. I love what I do. And I don't just teach art to kids. I have after-school guitar students I teach each week. I have an after-school chess club that's been meeting regularly for over 20 years. And for the past 5 years or more I have acted as the crossing guard adviser to our 5th grade crossing guards. Each morning and after school, I'm outside with the crossing guards helping to supervise and offering guidance. I love this part of my job.

I play guitar, sing lots of kids songs, and am a pretty good storyteller. I have dozens of puppets that I use on a somewhat regular basis. I love doing these things and teaching in an elementary school gives me many opportunities to exercise these passions.

And so I will be exiting a phase of my life that has blessed me beyond my dreams. I'll still be able to sub and likely will be asked to preform in a few assemblies. I have entertained in libraries and other schools, sharing my many songs and stories over the past many years. I can still do some of that.

But it's time to pass the baton. This is how I am looking at my upcoming retirement. It's the turn someone else to do what I've been lucky enough to do. I want to be emotionally ready to give up what has meant so much to me in my life. My career has given me far more than I could ever give it. And it's by God's grace that I am what I am today. I've had the best job in the world, perfectly suited for me. My job has allowed me to express myself in ways that truly reflect my philosophy of teaching and my love for kids. I know I will miss it.

Stay tuned.....
We start with a one day workshop where I go over the basics of working with clay and the clay tools. After that, the kids create either pinch pot creatures or creations of their own, I'm always amazed that a few kids come up with their own ideas and take the project to another level.

I just posted a bunch of pictures here.
I probably won't do much other than announce when I upload student work. I have about 3 years left to retirement and am putting more time into my music.

However I would still like to share what I'm doing in my classroom and other items of interest. I hope some of you may find the things I share useful. I have benefited greatly from the ideas of others and want to do my part in sharing what's working in my art class. These days I use Pinterest a lot. I get many ideas for projects and centers from my fellow Pinterest "friends." My page is here.

My web page is down (deleted accidently) and so I've put my classroom art projects here: https://www.facebook.com/artmakeskidssmart If you "like" the page you'll get updates. You can also join here: https://www.facebook.com/MrTisArtSmart (add me as a friend) and you'll get update notices here too. I think it's only necessary to like the art page for the notices however.

I've recently added the following:
I have lots of other albums on the page as well and more are coming. God bless and Happy New Year to all!Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12610949345380216302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6614930573743897800.post-53616872614401165702014-11-09T20:41:00.003-08:002014-11-09T20:44:01.180-08:00FrankenstienThis is a project that was easy to get ready and the kiddos loved it! I make the materials available for all grade levels except that for kindergarten and 1st grade we did it step-by-step together.

I cut the hair out as a rectangle and showed the kids how to zig-zag cut the hair. Even the kindergartners caught on to this. For K-1 I pre-cut the 8x8 head and the smaller neck square. I always cut the pieces down for the younger kids so they don't waste paper. For older kids I direct them to the scrap box.

I found this idea on pinterest. And don't get me wrong: I model basic ideas and even sometimes require certain activities (like when we learn how to make a pinch pot with modeling clay). But when it comes time to "express" one's inner artist, I get out of the way. I observe and help with ideas where needed. I ask questions. I am always surprised by something new.
When I was first introduced to the idea of cardboard construction I was hesitant because it seemed to be an impossible storage task. But with a bunch of boxes, each with a class name on it, I was able to keep each class's creations separate and organized, even in my very small room.

I set out pieces of cardboard that I had cut in a variety of sized, tape, glue, toilet paper rolls, and other things, and told the kids to build. I offered a few helpful suggestions here and there but didn't give a lot of instructions on what to make (or even how). I find that too much information leads to carbon copies of my ideas so I focus on technique and only what's necessary to get started. I keep my eye on the works in progress and offer help when I see it's needed.

I'm amazed at the results.
It's been a long while since I last added something to this blog. I have added too many after school activities to my list of "things I want to do" that I've had little energy to add much here. I've been taking classical guitar lessons and I actually practice every day. So I've been putting in a lot of energy in that pursuit.

Well, I have some pictures of some of the things the kids have been doing and I'm in the sharing mood. So here goes.

My art room is set up with 6 different stations. In one of those stations I rotate different activities on a regular basis. Currently station 4 is a "Bean Art) station. I'm surprised at how popular this was with the kids. Someone gave me a whole lot of different colored beans and so I put them in a tub along with some glue and gave the kids a few examples. Here are a few of the results:
This is a project that we did a few years ago based on an exercise in Mona Brookes' book, Drawing With Children. The exercise was similar to this art project.

I found this similar idea in a google search just now. Interesting how different people can come up with identical ideas. The exact inspiration for me likely came from several sources.

The directions are simple. Draw a variety of shapes using the technique of overlapping. I distinguish between three types of shapes: Geometric; Organic (that found in nature); and Free-form. Some students needed to be "encouraged" to add more shapes to their pictures to balance them out. When the drawing (done in pencil) is done, it can be outlined in a black marker. If you're brave, have students just draw in a permanent black marker as it saves a step.

You can use any kind of color scheme you'd like (for example warm colors for shapes and a cool color background). Or just let the kids decide. One rule I had was that they had to use a variety of colors and that two connecting shapes could not be the same color. Each section of the shapes had to be colored in different colors. (see the examples to get an idea).

For coloring we used markers and I teach my students to treat the marker like it's a paint brush. The tip of the marker is like the tip of a brush. You can make thick and thin lines depending on how you hold the marker.

All lines in a given area are to follow the same direction. That means that each section is treated like a canvas unto itself. Circle and oval shapes can have circular lines but straight line shapes must have straight marker lines (and they must all follow the same direction. Students may first outline the shape but then all subsequent lines must have the same direction. The outlining helps students to keep withing the boundaries of the shape. I have my students point their marker tips toward the black border line when outlining the shape.

The marker lines in the background should all follow the same direction. Either left to right or top to bottom or diagonal. One line is colored at a time and then the next line is added. I don't allow students to use their markers like crayons (using a back and forth movement).

I think the effect is rather nice. Look closely at the lines in each example. You'll see what I mean. If this doesn't make sense, please let me know. I'll try to clarify.

However, you will likely see where some students didn't exactly follow the "rules" above. You can decide for yourself if this matters. Let me know what you think. It's a great lesson for teaching color theory, balance, overlapping, and technique.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12610949345380216302noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6614930573743897800.post-75766828106394672082013-06-30T21:00:00.002-07:002014-11-02T18:47:18.154-08:00Pointillism for Primary Grades

They are ready to use in minutes. I add the paint lids (I have the spill-proof type) and I cover them at night. The only downside is that after a while, if the fiber cylinders are left in too long, the paints starts to smell. So after a few days I remove them. By that time most of the useful ink has been drained.

Now it just occurred to me that I don’t have an example picture so I will have to start looking. Please share your thoughts and ideas on the uses of dried out markers! Happy Thanksgiving!
Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12610949345380216302noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6614930573743897800.post-45687873164845631242012-10-31T22:19:00.003-07:002012-10-31T22:19:51.414-07:00Pumpkins

Well, not exactly. There's still the aftermath. Students are always a bit more "excited" this time of year. Some days can be very challenging. But for the past two week, I've managed to keep the excitement down by keeping the kiddies busy. Here's an activity that is always fun this time of year. I provided the kids with pumpkin cutouts to trace large orange pumpkins. The instructions were simple: Make a pumpkin face any way you want (as long as it's appropriate). I provide them with plenty of things to glue on to the orange pumpkins and then I get out of the way. I did help with the mustaches after being asked. But I was able to demonstrate the process and some kids were able to make their own. I've set up a link to my new Facebook page for photo albums. Here is a link to the pumkin pictures: PUMPKINS
My room is about 1/3 less in size than a regular classroom. It may be even 1/2 as I've never measured. I know that it is small. To make matters worse (different really) I've added three new tables (seriously). I've turned three rectangle tables up against the wall and added three round tables. It works! Now I have 8 tables and can add some new centers.

This year I'm going to try something different when it comes to blogging. In the past I tried to get the blog post and art gallery ready at the same time. As a result, I put off many posts until I had the gallery made and that really slowed things down. In some cases I didn't get the gallery made and therefore didn't share an idea. So......

I'll be adding blog posts without galleries sometimes and then add the galleries later. I'll announce when new galleries are posted to the website. I'm actually far behind on things I want to post and am hoping that this idea will motivate me to "just do it!"

Have a wonderful year and I hope to have many new (and old) things to share.
Art Show 2012

Our school district's art teachers have talked about doing an art show together for some time now. This was our year. We set up at our local civic center using tables, display flats, and walls. I've posted a gallery of pictures (lots of them). The pictures range from kindergarten to 12th grade. I don't have them separated in any way. I'm sort of random that way. Enjoy! We have some fantastic artists!
And although I am no longer able to work with the kindergarten classes due to a change in their schedule, I stay in contact with them and help them with projects as much as I'm able. But I do have some "unpublished" kindergarten work that I will try to share over time. This is a project I did with kindergarten in 2010. It would have been posted sooner but I have pictures all over the place. Just like my messy room, my computer is a mess too! But I think I have it organized finally. (crosses fingers)

I taught kindergarten for 8 years and this project was one of my favorites.

Here's my basic approach:
*We used scissors, glue, paper punches, crayons, and of course, colored construction paper.
*Cut the construction paper (ahead of time) to the proper size (squares and rectangles). **For example, I cut the mouse bodies approximately 2x3** --( I cut all pieces to size except for the legs and tails. Kids are on their own there.)
*Demonstrate how a square/rectangle can be made to look round simply by snipping off the corners.
(**I also demonstrate how to round off the corners but explain that if they have difficulty with doing that, just snip off the tips**)
*Add a light color to the background paper using the long-side of a crayon. As you will see in the gallery, we tried dark and it's not as nice looking.
*Add color to the rocks (for texture) using the long-side of a crayon. Using several colors gives a nice effect.
*Display ;)

BTW, I used as a model for the picture one of the pages of Lionni's book. Frederick is "sharing" the things he's stored up for the winter.
The idea came from a Donna Hugh video. I love the instructional possibilities of this lesson. I was able to talk about composition, balance, unity, repetition, atmospheric perspective, color choices, just to name a few.

However, my main focus was on the coloring technique. The middle school art teacher actually refers to this method as the "Mr. Triplett Marker Method." I did not originate the idea and have seen other teachers use it as well. It offers a nice effect when using markers.

I tell the kids that the marker is like a paint brush. It has a tip where the color is and like a brush, it can be "brushed" on (so to speak). The method is simple: Lines run side by side and follow the same direction. They can follow the contour of an object (and should) but in some cases should follow straight lines. The object one is coloring dictate the type of line (curved or straight) one is using. I use this method to avoid the "scribble" effect one can get with using markers. In some cases, using a marker like you would a crayon (coloring back and forth) is OK and works well. But it can also derail an otherwise great artwork. The example should give you an idea of what I mean. I'll guess that many of you have your students use this same method when using markers. I'd love to hear your feedback on this one! Here's a few finished examples and a gallery of student artwork is found HERE on my website.
